Vegas this Fall!

Jae and I are going to Vegas this fall since Southwest is having a great deal on flights right now...if anyone is interested and has a particular weekend in mind, give us a reply. We are pretty flexible, but October or November would be best (weather-wise and time-wise).

Viva Las Vegas!!!

[L] US Advances

Well we squeaked through in Cinderella fashion but my heart can't take much more.

After watching the past two games I have come to realize why it has taken soccer so long to gain momentum in the states.

It boils down the that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when a single call by the referee totally changes the outcome of the game. And I'm not talking just about losing momentum; I'm talking about turning a W into an L.

Soccer fans worldwide seem to covet this experience as "part of the game" and we Americans just don't understand the emotional aspect of the sport, but it seems to me that refs should be there only to enforce the rules of the game as objectively as possible. And in a day and age when technology is so ubiquitous, why not use everything at hand to make this possible?

It is an insurmountable task for one man make every right and wrong call in such a fast-moving and subtle sport. But we should just swallow that lump in our throats and throw it up "part of the game" when another one almost slips through our fingers?

[L] Britain Unveils Emergency Budget

A step in the right direction for a country where half of the jobs are on the public payroll. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a little jealous that England has the cojones to pull the trigger on this and our politicians don't...

I also find it funny that this came right after Obama was telling all the other G20 countries not to go crazy trying to bring down their deficits too fast. Since, you know, we're the ones who should be doling out financial advice.

Website Suggestions

Hey guys I have a question for you and I am not sure if I have asked this before, if so sorry just deal with it and answer again. So Irene is looking to get a website up and running to try and help promote her side business of designing wedding dresses. Now in terms of functionality it does not right now need to be a full blown business website. For her the most important thing would be to display and protect her portfolios/pictures and perhaps have the ability to have a little bit of freedom within the pages to try and be creative. She also needs the ability to have a section describing her background and tell potential clients what she can do for them. Also, since she is not trying to go all out on this right now cost is obviously a concern.

Just curious to see if you guys have came across anything or might have any suggestions..thanks for your help.

We also plan to have a section dedicated to making fun of Rory...so that should help.

Developments

I figured that this is the best way to tell everyone this. On Thursday morning I put my 2 weeks notice in at my job. June 11th will be my last day at my current job. Essentially promises were made and they were not kept. Not 100% sure what I am doing next but I will figure it out. Kind of scary to leave a job with no job but I think it was the right thing to do. I will of course let everyone know what my next move is. I hope everyone is enjoying their memorial day.

Another move

Well with Nick posting his news of moving, I figured I would post my latest news. I am now a Vermonter! I'm not moving from Boston for another few weeks but we had to get Allie a car and there was no sense registering it in Mass. Therefore we drove up to VT and got all the cars registered. For those who haven't heard, I am graduating school in a few weeks and starting work with a small group in Middlebury. It is great to be going back to Allie and my alma mater and I am excited to finally make some money! I hope that some of you can make a visit someday!

Moving (literally) On

Well as some of you may know I went on a job interview in Tampa and as of today I officially accepted the job. I tried my hand in sales in a tough market and it was not going great so I started looking elsewhere when this job came out of nowhere. It all happened pretty quick I went on the interview last week and got the job offer yesterday. I will be going to Tallahassee beginning of June for a couple of months of training then after our lease is up July 31st will be moving to Tampa as they just opened a office there. It is a insurance company named Star and Shield specializing in selling insurance to first responders (Fire rescue, Police and EMT). There is some risk involved as this company is still young, but they have been very successful and are ran by people with tons of insurance experience and have some great financial backing from some well respected insurance companies. If things continue as planned it will allow me to be on the ground floor of a company that is looking to be a multi state company in the next year or two with huge growth potential.

Also, good news is Irene already has a job interview at Nieman Marcus, but if that does not workout she will probably just find a 9-5 someplace and really concentrate on being a independent bridal designer. She will also still probably still do some designing and consulting work for the boutique here in Charleston as the dress she designed for them has been selling really well. So if you know anybody who wants a chance at a custom made wedding gown on the cheap don't be afraid to ask ( hint hint Amanda haha no pressure for real)

So there ya go ladies and gentlemen I will be seeing most of you a lot more frequently, which is awesome and will be able to fly out to the North (or West) much easier now. Peace out.

Nick to the D

PS Rory I am working on letting you move up to Tampa and live with me and Irene..stay tuned....

Return of Personal Websites?

Lifehacker.com was taking a vote today for the best 'personal landing page' and while going through the comments I noticed flavors.me was getting the majority of the votes. Curious, I checked it out and I was impressed with what I found. They provide a single page, customizable with a very simple (limited) interface, that essentially aggregates your social networking and media accounts into a central hub for people to access everything 'you'. I think this would be pretty cool to throw onto a business card. Check out my new page at http://flavors.me/emousseau.

Out with the old...

So after years of owning a desktop, I finally got sick of having to deal with that giant mess. Since I am graduating from school in about a month, Allie and I are moving up to VT and I didn't really feel like dealing with moving the desktop. After looking at different options and really thinking about what I use my computer for, I decided I really do nothing more than surf the web. So... I bought a cheapo netbook: Acer Aspire One D250. It is actually really cool and I like it a lot so far. It only has 1GB of RAM but it does have a nice 250GB hard drive. Surprisingly it has almost the exact specs of my desktop.

The shitty part is that it came loaded with Windows 7 Starter. For those not familiar with Starter, it blows ass. It is so stripped down it doesn't even allow you to change your background image! And to update Windows, it is at cheapest $70. Seeing as the netbook only cost $280, that is ridiculous. So I am now officially operating on Linux. It isn't as weird as I thought it was going to be. The only down side is that I can't get Skype to work. Oh well. Anyway, thought some of you computer guys would be interested. Any thoughts on improving Ubuntu, let me know.

Hand Turkey

Since I am stuck and bored in the Dallas airport I have a few minutes to post. The blog has become pretty political as of late and I would like to offer a warning on hitching your star to the tea party movement. The movement has been hijacked by crazies, not your run of the mill crazies, but tin foil hats, minorities are the enemy crazies. I for one enjoy ethnic food, but I have only myself to blame when Indian food goes bad. If Palin is your banner carrier you have issues. IPhone tried to change palin to palindrome; note palin spelled backwards is alaskan beauty queen with no business in politics. In Alaska sometimes a walrus places in the beauty pageant, so winning is like being the prettiest girl in the burn ward. I was by the four seasons yesterday and both ex-president Bushes were hanging out with the king of Jordan, or so the bartender told me. It explains why there were secret service people locking down the taco diner.

Meet Chandler Bing! He's a 5 week old rat terrier that we are tentatively bringing home on April 30th. We anticipate (and if our research is any indication, we should be correct) he'll be like Moose, only not quite as ON and better suited for apartment living. I sure hope he doesn't tear the place up... but something tells me with a face like that he'll probably get away with a lot... the lil' Bingaling!

Chris Weinke living in Bradenton

You always knew Chris Weinke would be back in football. It's been 10 years since he led the 'Noles to a perfect season, going wire to wire for Bobby Bowden's second national championship. The former Heisman Trophy winner was in the NFL from 2001-2007 playing for both the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers. And after a few years in the business world, Weinke is back in the game as the Director of the IMG/Madden Football Academy in Bradenton, Florida. "This offers me the opportunity under the tutelage of Coach Madden and alongside long time NFL and college coaches to gain coaching experience and work with some of the best minds in the game," said Weinke. As the director of the academy, Weinke will coach, hire staff for camps, and work closely with John Madden to build curriculum for the students.

We may have to take a trip to IMG boys to see if we can chat with the Weinkster...pretty awesome.

Death by a thousand cuts

I see that we are all speechless about the healthcare "reform" that was passed on Sunday or as I like to call it, America's death by a thousand cuts. Constitutionality aside, these guys are so clueless as to what the American people want it's insane. The representative from our district got the front-door of her office smashed in from people angry about her support for the bill. Now obviously I don't condone vandalism but that just shows the level of anger from the people she is supposed to represent.

The next thing they plan to shove down our throats is financial regulation reform. This from the lame-duck senator from CT who if you just look at his picture screams career-politician. Why can't he just retire and leave us alone instead of saddling us with more regulation and another consumer protection agency to protect us from the big bad businessman. We already have a consumer protection agency, it's called the internet. Freedom of information=consumer protection.

These incumbents are ripe for the picking. All of them. The dems are obviously off their rockers but the republicans are no better. They are so obviously removed from reality it is sickening. We need congressional seats to be unpaid positions again, or term limits, or something. This has gotten way out of hand.

Hey guys how are you? It's been awhile... Hope you guys are all doing great! Looking through the old posts I just noticed some of you, or Eric at least, are into craft beer! Just wondering if this is catching on wherever you are. Finally seeing real beer being served in more places in Miami. Also, Eric, have you tried brewing anything else since the pale ale in December? Just wondering, we're interested in trying down here in Miami and would be curious about any advice you have to offer. Happy brewing!

NCAA Tournament Challege

Join up ladies and gents and let's have some fun. It seems pretty wide open this year as there is not a completely dominate team. Certainly teams like Kentucky and Kansas look solid, but definitely beatable. FSU will make it for the second straight year this year probably a 8-10 seed so hopefully just winning ONE game will be good. Will UF miss it for the third straight year??? We shall find out in about 2 hours it is a fun time of year so sign up and let's pick some winners.

Prediction: I will beat Rory in this challenge...the game within the game.

Sad day at the Beal household

Opie went to doggy heaven yesterday. Mom found him floating in the bayou. He has been in and out with his senility the past 6 months or year. He was deaf and had poor eye site. Dad had him on some meds but took him off as he seemed to be worse on them. After a month of him wandering off and falling in the bayou, his time was up. Mom says he had a wonderful day before falling in. He played chase a few times with Peppy, he slept in the warm sun, and had a few snacks.

He would have been 15 in May.

RIP Opie!

Randomness

So I am doing some spring cleaning (in January) by trying to remove my old web presence on plaza.ufl.edu. This required me to resurect my old login by getting my password reset (thought to do this last time we were in gville visiting debbie). It also required me to find the little sheet of paper that my new password was written on. Found this today while doing some actual cleaning.

It's pretty funny what all I had on the plaza.ufl.edu ftp site. Found some old programs that I wrote way back when. One of them was a flash game to play beer pong that I never finished (link). Another was a program that would pick winning lottery numbers by going out on the web and grabbing past winning numbers to help predict (link). Man, this guy had some ambition way back when what happened to that guy?

Also found a bunch of SimCity screenshots that I apparently thought were worth saving for some reason:

Rented Toyota Yaris 1 - Costa Rican Jungle River 0

It has been a great while since I have posted on the blog so I have a backlog of happenings to share. Today's post concerns my Costa Rican Adventure.

The above picture is what happens when a bridge washes out and you need to be on the other side of the river. I had purchased full insurance and felt my rented yaris would make it across, or be light enough to push out should the river prevail.

What they do not mention in the tour guides is the easy availability of liquor of all kinds even far removed from civilization. Alcohol reminds people how much fun go fish can be at 4am in the middle of the jungle. It also gave me ample ammunition to try and scratch an item from my bucket list to R. Kelly a monkey in a foreign land, but sadly alcohol also makes the aim poor and the sight hazy.

Costa Rica is more than just failing infrastructure and peed upon monkeys it is also crazy scenic, where a drive across country has many wonders to behold. Upon my return to the states and my place of employment, I was told it by a co-worker that it reminded her of Arkansas. I have not had the chance to set foot in the state of the razorback and Clintons, but if it looks anything like Costa Rica, I would never make an inbred pig caller joke again because they would be some of the smartest people in the world to keep something so beautiful a secret by pretending to be extras from deliverance.

While in Costa Rica I picked up a surf board, mainly because I thought it might be hilarious to visit a Costa Rican ER, but to my surprise being tall and completely uncoordinated do not hamper your ability to surf. WII has given me impressive balance skills that lend themselves nicely to surfing. No pictures were taken during our surf excursion so you will have to take my word on my long board skills.

In our little jungle surfing community we met some expats both of the feline and crazy variety. A grown woman at a bar who speaks only through her lamb chop puppet is completely acceptable in my book, but then again I enjoy people with some freak on them. I also shared my $6 dollar lobster with a cat that hopped in my lap, at $6 dollars I can afford to share my lobster. The spiny lobster is proof of the unfair nature of the universe, you are made delicious and accompany butter perfectly, but have no claws or defense mechanisms with which to spare yourself from the boil.

It was a good time and a land where normal hangover rules do not apply, because apparently you can drink as much costa rican beer as you want and feel no ill effects, unless you happen to be a monkey casually walking through the jungle who just happens to pass below my balcony, then my friend you will feel an ill effect of a whole different variety.

Growing Up - Step 1

So now that I am in a serious relationship again and bachelor life appears to be over, I decided to re-focus on the long-term and make some changes financially. The most obvious change being reducing my $600 car payment on my Evolution. After about two months of removing/selling parts and finding a car, I finally made the deal this weekend.

From $36k 2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR...
Photobucket

To $18k 2005 Subaru WRX STI...
Photobucket

Obviously I was crazy upside-down in the Evo, but I was able to sell all my aftermarket parts for about $6k, so I was able to get out cleanly...which is a miracle considering I owned it 1 year in January.

Step 1 Complete.

Cut the Cord

So last night at around 11pm something miraculous occurred.

We finally cut the cord and cancelled our service with DIRECTV. Furthermore, we did not replace them with any new cable/satellite provider.

We will now be getting all of our content through HD Over-the-air, Hulu, Netflix, ESPN 360, or possibly purchasing a season of something through I-Tunes.

I'm sure there will be an adjustment period as watching whatever was on was the fall-back activity in times of boredom but it got to the point where we just couldn't justify the cost each month.

Anyone else out there cut the cord or thinking about it?

As many of you heard, Alex's 360 fell victim to the dreaded RROD. Instead of paying to get it fixed by Microsoft, he offered it up to me for a repair attempt while he got a new one.
