ARGH!! I am so jealous. That trip looks like the exact thing Allie and I had planned for the beginning of the month. Oh well, now you can give us recommendations for when we go! What were the coastal towns you went to? What was your favorite part of the trip?
A friend provided a great itinerary: 3 nights in Rome, then the train to Sorrento for 3 nights, with side trips to Pompeii, Positano, and Capri. Then we picked up a car and hit a few wine country towns (Montepulciano and Siena) and ended up in Florence where we stayed 2 nights. Then stopped in Pisa on our way to Portovenere for 2 nights. We also hiked the Cinque Terre through Montorosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Adam - If you guys are up for B&B's, we have a lot of good lodging recommendations. Jae's favorite part of the trip was all the good pizza. Every area we visited was so unique, it's hard to pick a fav, but I really liked the Cinque Terre, Rome and Siena.
That is so funny. Our trip was going to be Rome, then driving to Sienna and Cinque Terre. Do you think you had enough time in each place? Our idea was to stay a little longer in each spot to sort of get a better feel for each area. But it would be good to know if it gets monotonous. I would LOVE B&B recommendations. We definitely want to stay at smaller places.
I think 3 nights per city would be optimal. Try to be in Rome on a Wednesday if you want to see the Pope (he gives papal audiences on Wednesday at St. Peter's). We were there for the 'sex scandal' speech, but didn't know if until it was later translated on CNN :) We did Rome in 3 parts, ancient part on day 1, then the Vatican on day 2, and then Spanish Steps/Borghese Gallery on day 3.
We stayed outside of Florence in a great B&B (highly recommended - Firenza B&B) but it would have been nice to stay the night in Siena too with a day trip to Florence. Siena is a much smaller, less touristy Florence, plus it's a college town so a much younger crowd.
It definitely won't get monotonous since Rome, Siena and the Cinque Terre are so different. Def do the hike in Cinque Terre but start early as it gets hot. We stayed in Portovenere which is a beautiful little port town but it probably would have been more convenient (but expensive) to stay in one of the Cinque Terre towns.
I found all of our B&B's/apartments through Trip Advisor since the ratings are usually right on, but can email you the links to our places if you are interested. When are you guys re-scheduling your trip?
At this point we have no idea when we are going to do the trip. I am finishing up school in a few weeks and then we are moving up to VT in mid-June. Then I start work in July, so who knows when I will get time off to spend in Italy. Hopefully within the year though.

Siena was one of my favorites while I was there.
