New OS

I installed xubuntu last night which is a variant of ubuntu running on a less demanding desktop environment.

The install went amazingly smoothly. There is a nice GUI for setting up your partitions and it even sets up your grub.conf for you. It found my Windows drive and set it up so I can dual boot.

The install found all my hardware and my speakers even worked right off the bat (which I haven't had much luck with other linux distros).

My only gripe is the lack of `su`. You have to do all admin work through sudo.

I haven't gotten to do much with it yet, gotta go to work and all.

But this could be the start of a renewed friendship between my home life and linux (we just linux at work).

Yea, I have no idea what you are talking about. I am but a simple man who is happy that he knows how to do simple equations on excel.

Has it been a long time since you've installed linux at home? Installs tend to be less painless than Windows installs nowadays. I have personally liked Unbuntu and Suse Enterprise Desktop 10, but it's been a while for me now, too. It always comes down quality and selction of software, and linux has been and always will be lacking in that department. Once I start to build a collection of spare PCs I'll be using Linux to run a file server and my home theater, but I don't think I'll ever be able to use it as my permanent desktop environment.

I'll let you know if I find myself wanting for any of my old windows programs. I'm lucky enough to have access to a pretty large linux knowledge-base from my co-workers (they've been linux-only for some time now).

I admit that I pretty much only surf the web and check email on my PCs, but I have few projects I am going to start and I needed a better development environment than Windows.

lmao... I only understood every word of one sentence in that post and was very relieved to see Drew's comment so I knew that I wasn't the only one...
