SEC Excuses

Let me start by saying I am in favor of a playoff system just as much as the next guy. Reading these posts seems like two teams who are upset that they lost and essentially lost all hopes of a national title. I agree the SEC is very tough this year but let us all not forget that LSU did win the BSC championship a couple of years ago. And by all means Auburn caught some bad luck 2 yrs ago with a great season. So I dont quite follow all this bitching and moaning. Plain and simple you need to have a sick ass team to get to the title game not just good to very good teams like AU and UF are. And lets not forget the SEC has a .500 winning percentage in bowl games the last 2 yrs. If the conference is the best in the world by far every single year according to the SEC teams then why is there bowl record not reflecting that. Now im not bashing your two teams clearly you have good teams and im not claiming FSU is anything but average this year. This is just what it seems like to fans not from the self proclaimed best conference in the world. Good luck with the rest of your seasons. Except for UF the day the J's get married. So Nick, are you saying that if you put AU or UF in the ACC or the Big East, it wouldn't make a difference at all? Don't start saying its an excuse, its a fact. Year in and year out, the SEC has arguably the toughest teams which makes every game a tough game. There is no way you can argue that a league like the ACC or Big East has the same level of competition. I think our schedules speak for themselves (compare UF and FSU).
Asking for a playoff system is not crying for an excuse. Its calling for a more accurate measure to crown a national champion. Who knows if an SEC team would win a playoff system, but it sure would leave little excuse to a definitive national champion.

I have to totally agree with Nick. Other than Auburn two years ago, who had a legitimate argument for the title, the national championship has played out correctly for the most part. For the record I am all about a play-off system, but OVERALL, the system has worked. Until UF is badass enough to run the table, I don't want to here excuses blaming it on the schedule or conference. The National Championship is for the BEST team in college football, and the BEST team would run the table regardless of conference. That being said...what a great game it was. Good hard-hitting, fast football. Great job Auburn.

I think most of my "bitching" comes from a comment Lee Corso said after the AU-UF game. He said that the game told us one thing: the SEC would not have a team in the national championship. (Please watch the video of the post-game coverage on ESPN.) However, I know Corso is an idiot, but comments like this remind me of two years ago. I firmly believe the SEC is the best conference (I am extremely biased), but without a playoff, the BCS will always make us wonder in the national title winner really did deserve it.

The BCS has Auburn at #4, which is wonderful but very confusing. If AU wins out and Arkansas wins out, there is the possibility that AU ends up in the title game without playing for the SEC title. How in the hell does that work? This kind of logic can only be made possible by the BCS.

Good point Alex. Playoff games could fix that.

Rory lets be honest we are all biased towards are conferences and we all think our average teams are better then other leagues average teams. And I know UF is having a good year but just assuming they would go and win out playing our schedule is an ignorant statement because every team provides different matchups and pitt falls for each team. But at least in my argument I provided a few stats supporting my opinion. And lets be honest as screwy as the BCS is at least it keeps us interested. The insane way it works is almost funny. But there will always be issues seeing as how biased people actually vote on which teams "deserve" to go. Lets just hope the people are not like us who vote. Didnt they add a BCS game this year why not just do and and one. 1 v 4, 2 v 3 then one more is that so hard. No but i guess our schools would rather us play some shit ass D1 school or a D1AA.
Rory = Nicks bitch

Wow im convinced even with a playoff system football would still be screwed up big time. Computers have UF 4 AU 5. 1 day after AU beats UF. Cal is ranked a head of Tennessee in the computer and UT railed Cal big time. And the only team UT has lost to is #4 UF. Man that is fucked up. Got to love computer logic. I am issuing a challenge to Jae or Eric, come up with a computer system that makes some sense.
Rory = Nicks X bitch...he didnt do it for me...down boy

Nick, I don't know what rankings you were looking at, but the BCS has 1-Ohio State 2-USC 3-Michigan 4- Auburn 5-West Virginia(can someone tell me why WV is ranked so high, they play no one)6-UF 7-Louisville 8-Notre Dame etc.... I am very surprised we were still ranked that high. Both sides (Nick & Bryan) vs. (Rory, Alex, and Jae) have provided good reasonings behind their respective points, but I really think that the SEC seems to get screwed because of strength of schedule.

Even when LSU won the Nat'l title in 2003, USC claimed it had the right to half the title. All I really have to say is I hate USC and I hope they don't get a chance to play in the title game again.

Also, I counted 6 errors in Nick's post and comments.
Nick = Webster's bitch and is need of a good English lesson :)

Yeah, I'm definitely not arguing this anymore b/c its pointless. As long as there are FSU and UF fans here there are going to be different point of views. But I am pretty positive if FSU were in a position to be in the Nat'l Title game then some people would be singing some different tunes.

On a non-sports note, everyone should go see The Departed. By far the best movie I have seen in a while.

A note about Playoffs in college football, it rocks. Having had the opportunity to witness the D1-AA playoffs (04 Colgate Red Raiders, 2nd team to make it to a National Championship game with no Scholarship athletes, first was Lehigh in 1981) a few years back, it is a great system, but still it has its problems as well. How many teams will you let in? Who gets home field advantage? I would say we would have to worry about the players academics, but lets not kid ourselves. On that note, I am out. 22 days and counting.
