The Mindset List

Came across a reference to the MindSet list that Beloit College comes out with each year. It lists some facts about the incoming class as information for the faculty.

It makes for some interesting observations:

I feel like this reads more like a list of things that happened when we were born or events that were vaguely similar to something that happened 30 years prior thereby replacing it in our psyche. It's like it was written under the assumption that we were never exposed to anything that wasn't created/done in our lifetime. I found myself repeatedly saying to myself "uhh... no?". While somewhat useful, I hope teachers didn't stereotype us with these 'facts'.

PS - lawn darts weren't always illegal, I used to play with them all the time when I was a kid! Wikipedia says they were banned in 1988. There are probably many other inaccuracies in the list.

Haha, well I felt the same way, Eric! It is interesting nonetheless though.

Wait, you mean Madonna's version of American Pie wasn't the original??

I agree - just because I wasn't able to process memories when some of that stuff was happening doesn't mean that I don't know about them. I've also used White Out from a bottle and read Huckleberry Finn (remember your video with black-faced Josh?). Some of the ones for the now 18 year olds are interesting though, especially those regarding politics, internet/social networking, & parenting. Says a lot about how far we've come & where we might be headed.
