Sad day at the Beal household

Opie went to doggy heaven yesterday. Mom found him floating in the bayou. He has been in and out with his senility the past 6 months or year. He was deaf and had poor eye site. Dad had him on some meds but took him off as he seemed to be worse on them. After a month of him wandering off and falling in the bayou, his time was up. Mom says he had a wonderful day before falling in. He played chase a few times with Peppy, he slept in the warm sun, and had a few snacks.

He would have been 15 in May.

RIP Opie!

First snow since 1989

It is not as bad as what Drew got hit with in DC, but we have not had snow here since 89. It was a solid couple inches after it was a done snowing and it was pretty cool to see the palm trees covered in snow. I thought I moved from NYC to avoid this crap....global warming my butt.

Randomness

So I am doing some spring cleaning (in January) by trying to remove my old web presence on plaza.ufl.edu. This required me to resurect my old login by getting my password reset (thought to do this last time we were in gville visiting debbie). It also required me to find the little sheet of paper that my new password was written on. Found this today while doing some actual cleaning.

It's pretty funny what all I had on the plaza.ufl.edu ftp site. Found some old programs that I wrote way back when. One of them was a flash game to play beer pong that I never finished (link). Another was a program that would pick winning lottery numbers by going out on the web and grabbing past winning numbers to help predict (link). Man, this guy had some ambition way back when what happened to that guy?

Also found a bunch of SimCity screenshots that I apparently thought were worth saving for some reason:

Rented Toyota Yaris 1 - Costa Rican Jungle River 0

It has been a great while since I have posted on the blog so I have a backlog of happenings to share. Today's post concerns my Costa Rican Adventure.

The above picture is what happens when a bridge washes out and you need to be on the other side of the river. I had purchased full insurance and felt my rented yaris would make it across, or be light enough to push out should the river prevail.

What they do not mention in the tour guides is the easy availability of liquor of all kinds even far removed from civilization. Alcohol reminds people how much fun go fish can be at 4am in the middle of the jungle. It also gave me ample ammunition to try and scratch an item from my bucket list to R. Kelly a monkey in a foreign land, but sadly alcohol also makes the aim poor and the sight hazy.

Costa Rica is more than just failing infrastructure and peed upon monkeys it is also crazy scenic, where a drive across country has many wonders to behold. Upon my return to the states and my place of employment, I was told it by a co-worker that it reminded her of Arkansas. I have not had the chance to set foot in the state of the razorback and Clintons, but if it looks anything like Costa Rica, I would never make an inbred pig caller joke again because they would be some of the smartest people in the world to keep something so beautiful a secret by pretending to be extras from deliverance.

While in Costa Rica I picked up a surf board, mainly because I thought it might be hilarious to visit a Costa Rican ER, but to my surprise being tall and completely uncoordinated do not hamper your ability to surf. WII has given me impressive balance skills that lend themselves nicely to surfing. No pictures were taken during our surf excursion so you will have to take my word on my long board skills.

In our little jungle surfing community we met some expats both of the feline and crazy variety. A grown woman at a bar who speaks only through her lamb chop puppet is completely acceptable in my book, but then again I enjoy people with some freak on them. I also shared my $6 dollar lobster with a cat that hopped in my lap, at $6 dollars I can afford to share my lobster. The spiny lobster is proof of the unfair nature of the universe, you are made delicious and accompany butter perfectly, but have no claws or defense mechanisms with which to spare yourself from the boil.

It was a good time and a land where normal hangover rules do not apply, because apparently you can drink as much costa rican beer as you want and feel no ill effects, unless you happen to be a monkey casually walking through the jungle who just happens to pass below my balcony, then my friend you will feel an ill effect of a whole different variety.

Growing Up - Step 1

So now that I am in a serious relationship again and bachelor life appears to be over, I decided to re-focus on the long-term and make some changes financially. The most obvious change being reducing my $600 car payment on my Evolution. After about two months of removing/selling parts and finding a car, I finally made the deal this weekend.

From $36k 2008 Mitsubishi Evo GSR...
Photobucket

To $18k 2005 Subaru WRX STI...
Photobucket

Obviously I was crazy upside-down in the Evo, but I was able to sell all my aftermarket parts for about $6k, so I was able to get out cleanly...which is a miracle considering I owned it 1 year in January.

Step 1 Complete.

Cut the Cord

So last night at around 11pm something miraculous occurred.

We finally cut the cord and cancelled our service with DIRECTV. Furthermore, we did not replace them with any new cable/satellite provider.

We will now be getting all of our content through HD Over-the-air, Hulu, Netflix, ESPN 360, or possibly purchasing a season of something through I-Tunes.

I'm sure there will be an adjustment period as watching whatever was on was the fall-back activity in times of boredom but it got to the point where we just couldn't justify the cost each month.

Anyone else out there cut the cord or thinking about it?

As many of you heard, Alex's 360 fell victim to the dreaded RROD. Instead of paying to get it fixed by Microsoft, he offered it up to me for a repair attempt while he got a new one. Possibly the Most Ridiculous Post Ever...

I honestly don't know why I'm asking this, because I am very aware that the people who routinely read this blog are likely not the people to be asking this question... but does anyone happen to watch So You Think You Can Dance? I was just curious, because I literally cannot stop talking about Jakob & Kathryn's contemporary piece last night and am running out of people to listen me say how amazing it was. Anyone? Guilty pleasure? It was seriously one of the most beautiful displays of dancing I've ever seen... even if you don't like dancing you'd probably think it was awesome. One of them better win tonight.

Nick's new job

Well it has finally happened I found myself a job I will be working for Robert Half as a recruiter. It is not what I moved down here expecting to do, but I am pretty excited about it. They specialize in placing Accounting and Finance professionals and like to hire people who have worked in the industry before coming to them so it kind of worked out. I will essentially become a glorified salesman of sorts and no a degree is necessary, but it makes me feel better that they pretty much only hire people who have degrees haha. I will be making a minimal base salary and will get a bonus each month depending on how many people I place in a job. So for the first 6 - 9 months or so I will not be making a ton of money, enough to live off of for sure but after I start rolling there could really be some good money in it. Hopefully the economy keeps improving and hopefully by the end of 2010 we are really starting to roll again. So not what I was expecting obviously, but hey you never know. I will say this people in this job all seemed to be very happy, which is a huge improvement over the people I worked with at my other jobs.

Bowls

Well yesterdays championship games were all pretty good (depending on who you like of course). It was pretty clear Bama was the better team, but hey two losses in two years is pretty damn good, trust me I would love to be in your position. I feel bad for most UF fans you have to understand it is tough for us to feel bad when a lot of you are like Rory (love you) which makes it tough. I wonder if the loss of Dunlap was that big or if it would not have mattered to much, I think it did. Anyway lets hope for good bowl matchups in the BCS. I hope they really mix it up and put like TCU v UF or GT or something like that. I think TCU could honestly beat anybody in this country, except Bama who looked very good.

I hope FSU gets to go to the Gator Bowl (which we do not deserve), but it would be awesome for us to get a shot to go to Bobby's last game. I am hoping somehow it works out it will make a lot of other ACC teams mad, but oh well they can suck it.

Alex where is Auburn looking to go bowling and against who??

Game Day

Well lets start this off with a sorry Alex. I could not watch any of the game, but it sounded like a good one I was pulling for you guys. You guys seemed pretty damn close to winning obviously the 4Q was not something you can be happy about.

Ok well let me give my realistic opinion on the FSU game. If we had Ponder I would like our chances a lot better, but we are starting a freshman QB making his 3rd career start. We are also missing our best OL who got injured two games ago. With those injuries going against that UF defense will be no easy task. We are also fielding a very bad defense that gives up a lot of rushing yards, which against Teblow is never a good thing. So for FSU to win we have to play near perfect on offense ( max 1 turnover) and we have to create a some turnovers ( something like 3). We also need to win the special teams battle or at the very least keep it neutral. Even if we win the turnover battle I just can't see our defense holding UF to below 24. Every FSU game has been fun to watch for better or for worse.

Now since this is a rivarly game you never know what can happen. We have nothing to lose and we do have speed and talent all over the field. Winning this game would not make our season, but it has a way of redeeming a bad season. Beating UF and taking them out of the title hunt would make my week. Beating Tebow in his last game would be great and handing you cocky assholes a loss would be something everybody would enjoy. FSU can win and I fully believe it.

GO NOLES BABY I HAVE FAITH...PS I will not be watching game day because I want to avoid the Tebow dick sucking fest that it will be. I will be posting my thoughts and comments during the game...

Rory today I hate you

This blog will just be a running documentary of my thoughts, emotions and just how I go through FSU football games. Please feel free to chime in because it will be filled with hating of UF, Rory and FSU. Many of my posts will be filled with one liners and curse words, exclamation points and offensive statements. It will be very juvenile in nature which is what I am all about. My thoughtful prediction thread will come later in the week.

Jae please invite Danny to the blog as he expressed desire to view the blog as he knows how I get during games. What do you need his email address or does he just need to try to log in? GO NOLES AND AUBURN UPSET CITY!!!!

Pats

Well I cannot believe what I just watched. The Pats played a spectacular game and yet somehow ended up losing. I know people don't like the Patriots but come on. The officials gave this thing to Indy. The second to last drive had that completely BS pass interference call that gave the Colts a TD way faster than they should have gotten it. Then the 4th and 2 spotting was pathetic. Yes it was risky for the Pats to go for it and it was stupid of them to use their timeouts so foolishly, but it was so clearly a first down. Ridiculous. I'm so sick of the refs deciding the outcome of games. Either way, the Pats looked awesome and assuming the refs don't continue these shenanigans, they have a good shot at going deep into the playoffs. That was the biggest waste of an evening. I wish I had gone to bed on time. Fuck you stupid refs.

New Lows and Predictions

Well Bowdens dirty little secret has finally got out to the national media and I am glad for it. His post game comments have been down right embarrassing for a couple of years now, but have taken on a whole new animal this year. Personally I am glad this came out it needed to, our Athletic Director will need all the ammunition he can to get Bowden to leave. I am sorry it is time for Bobby to go it is sad and embarrassing him and FSU. He is getting paid a ton of money to do nothing, NOTHING. I hope to god we have enough balls not to bring him back next year, we need, he needs it. Another year of this will just drive recruiting down for another year. If he stays on I want Jimbo to have full control of everything and Bobby can walk around and scratch his old wrinkled ass for all I care. Anyway predictions.

FSU @ Wake - I would have predicted a win, but we have a Freshman QB making his first ever start. I think our D will do OK, but Wake has a good QB and will put up some points. I think our running game keeps us in the game with the Frosh QB looking pretty decent. I just can't see us coming out on top as Wake is pretty disciplined Wake 27 - 24.

Auburn @ Dogs - This should be a good game to watch and I like Auburn to get another win and move to 8-3. I think this will be close though because Georgia is at home, I expect Auburn to win by 10+. Auburn 35 - 24.

UF @ SC - I think this game will be won by the defenses. I think UF will come out on top with a constant offense and their suffocating defense. I think it will be pretty close, but UF wins. 24 - 13

Ouch

I cannot believe this impact! Ponder should have just thrown himself in front of the guy instead of lead with his throwing shoulder. Poor guy.

Hopefully for the best

Well in the process of losing this weekend FSU officially will hit a all time low. Ponder is out against Wake and possibly the rest of the year, which means I see no way we can become bowl eligible. It is pathetic how far FSU has fallen and I am kind of happy for it. I see no way possible Bowden can possibly try to comeback. If he does I will be so pissed off, he needs to see the light and realize he is done. We might win one more game this year and a below .500 percentage is almost certain. I appreciate what he has done, but things HAVE to change. Ever since we let him put his jerk of a son as a offensive coordinator we gave him to much power. As bad as it sounds I can see us bending over and letting him comeback which would make me sick. Any small chance we had a winning any games this year probably went down the drain with Ponders injury. Ugh.......

Halloween 2009

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is a big day in the world of elections. VA, NJ and a congressional special. VA is usually the bellwether state. Most of the public polling numbers show the GOP candidate up by 10-12 points. That is basically what the internal numbers in those races are showing as well. NJ is going to be down to the wire. The internal numbers are showing that while no one likes Corzine, they are not certain Chris Christie is any different. So this will be close. As for the special election in upstate NY, this is completely FUBAR. My firm was doing the TV for the GOP candidate, I say 'was' because she dropped out on Saturday and then on Sunday endorsed...wait for it...the democrat, not the conservative party candidate. Best part was we only found this out because a couple of newspapers called to ask for our opinion, the campaign did not even tell us.
So basically both parties are starting the spin machine. GOP needs a clean sweep to really show they are moving forward. My thinking is that we win VA and the special in upstate, in that the conservative candidate wins, and NJ I think the 3rd party candidate drags us down to a loss, but a close one.

[L] Mafia Hit Caught on Tape

Crazy hit in the middle of the day...

Football Predictions

Ok well another round of what could be good games for all of our teams. Looks for the FSU game to be really high scoring as both of the defensed are bad. I think Ponder and Russel Wilson are both going to tear it up. I think FSU is the better overall team and comes out on top 41-33. Yes that is right the winning team in this matchup will be in the low 40's or high 30's I think. Ponder 350 yds passing and 3 TD's......

As for the UF game I am not sure what the line is but I am sure UF is favored. If UF continues to play the way it has the last couple of weeks I think they will get beat. However, if UF plays the way they did earlier in the year they will beat them pretty good...hmmm which team will show up? I think just like my pick'em I am going out on a limb here and predicting a narrow UGA victory. I need the points in pick'em to make a run at J

Auburn v Miss....sorry Alex I just can't see this coming out good for the War Eagle faithful. Miss appears to be rolling now while Auburn is rolling in the opposite direction. I think this game is close, but I don't think Auburn's D can hold them down. It pains me to pick Miss my friend, truly it does I want to believe. I do not think Snead is all he is cracked up to be though.

Colgate takes it to Lehigh and avenges their only loss of the season with a nice home victory......

Early Football Prediction

Since FSU has a Thursday night game this week I will get this out of the way early. As for FSU well word on the block is Jimbo contract is done and he will have the power to higher any coaches he wants next season in effort to get ready when he takes over after next season. However, they say Bobby will not agree to that because all he will be doing is become a figure head who gets the wins or losses for the year. Jimbo will essentially have full control because it will all be his staff. This is all rumor by the way. Let's get to it.

FSU @ UNC - UNC has a good D and a unproductive offense while FSU has a good offense and a bad D. FSU will be missing a starting CB, LB and a DT which will make this even worse. I think UNC will come out jacked up, but I do think we will be able to move the ball and score some points because Ponder is having a great year. FSU losses it close 27-23.

UF @ Miss St - UF roles enough said they take it by 21

AUB @ LSU - Well Alex I want to believe in Auburn because I think LSU is really overrated, but I have to go with LSU simply because they are at home. This one will be pretty close I think. LSU 20 - 17

Colgate @ Holy Cross - Drew this looks like the game that could decide who wins the Patriot League (not being a expert or anything). In the battle of two ranked teams I am going with a huge in by Colgate using there triple option to control the clock. Colgate wins and climbs up the polls. Colgate 23 - 20

PS If I was a betting man I would stay as far away from FSU as possible the D1 teams we have played this year have a combined record of ( 22-5). So we have been playing above average teams to say the least.

Looking at the first BCS standings of the year they do not look to bad for the most part. I mean I have no idea how UF is still #1, in my mind Bama is by far the best looking team in the country. UF has won just like Texas, but just like Texas they have looked not that great. Bama to me looks like the best team and I think we all can admit that. However, I still think UF is #2 so I guess it does not matter.

Boise St and number 4 is huge, no team from a non BCS conference has ever been that high, there win over Oregon is paying off big. However, I still think Cincinatti and Iowa still deserve to be above them when it all comes down to it because they are from a big conference with better opponents week in and week out. Obviously still a ton of time to go, but the top seven still no losses it will be interesting to see if teams like Boise St, Cincy and Iowa win out how they compare to a potential one loss team like: Bama, Texas, USC or UF.

Nick D over and out...getting drunk on a Sunday watching football because everyday is a weekend for me...SHIBBY!

[L] Cool new musical instrument

The Eigenharp Alpha and Pico. The first video is an extensive feature demo of the Alpha, the second is a quick look at the Pico, and the third is a group demo. What do you guys think? A legit instrument or something to toss into the 'what were they thinking' pile?

Zombieland

Anybody seen it? I saw it on Wednesday and thought it was fantastic. There were some great one liners and I liked the way it was directed as well. All and all I would give it a must see if you just want to kick back and watch a above average funny zombie movie. Keep in mind this movie ain't winning any awards so just go into it if you want a movie you can just turn your brain off and enjoy. Also, Woody Harrleson is the man and his name is Tallahassee in the movie.

Football

Well let's get down to it, some very good games nationally this weekend. One plus for FSU is that since we are not playing we can not lose, wooohoooo! Also, the NCAA has finally lost all appeals so we can finally release the information about the scandal we were in before. NCAA is such garbage it pisses me off they are wasting their and FSU's money in all of these trials. Now down to the games involving our collective teams.

Arkansas v UF. I think UF will take this one, but I think the razor backs make this game interesting. I think they will put up a few points in this game with Mallet. If UF's play calling/Tebow play it safe like against LSU the game could get interesting. I am predicting UF wins, but close. This game does register on the upset radar....a little.

Auburn v Kentucky. I think Auburn bounces back and takes it to Kentucky. Auburns offense retakes form and they trounce Kentucky 35-21.

Colgate takes on win less Gtown and continues on to 7-0. Drew I expect Colgate to get back on track and put up near 40 pts.

Some good games in the pick'em this week should be interesting. Have a good weekend.

Sorry for the terrible red-eye on some of these. I also didn't filter them since I am lazy.

-Chat +Random Previous Post

So the chat had a short-lived run, but it was clear that it wasn't a fit. So I dropped it and replaced it with a link to a random previous post. This isn't exactly what I wanted... I am still looking for a widget that will show a different random previous post each day. The current one will show each person a random post. My hope was to re-spark some previous convo's and if each person is taken to a different post, that doesn't really fit the bill.

Anyway, we'll see if this gets any action (feedback welcome) and like I said I'm still on the hunt...

Classic Conan

Thoughts on Football

In typical FSU fashion it was a crazy game. Also, in typical FSU fashion we have no defense I mean wow it was bad. This is main reason why Bobby needs to go after this year because we need a whole new defense staff and Bobby will never can his boys on defense. If we bring him back next year with everything the same I will be shocked. I see no way we make a bowl game or have a winning season, which is staggering.

UF was clearly the better team I mean Tebow did not look the same and he looked scared yet you guys still won. Part of me thinks Brantely should have played some, but you won so that is all that matters. UF defense is sick good is the bottom line.

As for Auburn sorry man it looks nobody showed up, trust me I know the feeling. Still a great start man you could be in my shows, well you were last year I guess.

Go Colgate 6-0 baby....keep rolling.

[L] US: Taliban has grown fourfold

This is sad considering this is the fight we should have been focusing on all along (IMO). Now support seems to be waning, probably due to the length of time that this conflict has gone on.

Award For Nick D

Hey everybody I just spent the last 10 min thinking of great ways to help the world and even though I have not done a damn thing about it I think I am deserving of award. If any of you know of a award that is given on pure rhetoric and a plan for action with no actual steps taken besides drafting very vague guidelines please let me know......anybody??

Tonight

Remember tonight is the Colgate v Princeton football game on ESPN U. This is Colgate's first regular season game on national TV. So for those of you who missed the great Snow Game of 2003 or the thrashing of FAU or our thrashing by Delaware in the playoffs, you can finally watch us destroy yet another Ivy league school.

F$#!ball

Some tough road games on the schedule for this weekend. Should make for great tv.

Auburn @ Arkansas - Auburn is an overwhelming favorite but any game on the road in the SEC is a potential loss. I think they will do okay though because I picked em :). Auburn over Arkansas 42-24

UF @ LSU - I am scared to death of this game. Nevertheless I trust that Urban will find a way. This will either make for the best weekend ever or I will be crawling into a bottle all day Sunday. Gators squeak out a W 24-21.

GT @ FSU - I actually picked the upset on this one. The upset in this case meaning FSU (which is crazy to think). I am guessing that the BYU noles will show up at home and make for a great game. If they get knocked over with a stiff breeze and f up my picks this week I will be pissed. Noles fans are given something to hang their hopes on 38-28.

[L] Nick there is hope for you yet

Well, let me be the first to say that the weekend was a huge success. Alex and Ashley, the wedding was wonderful and we wish you the best. It is a lot of fun being married, I must say! Everyone else, it was fantastic getting to see you all and I am excited for Christmas. So hopefully most of you will be around. Anyway, thanks for a great time and I hope everyone made it home safely.
